Fred Valentine
1935-2016
Fred Valentine was a well-known tree fruit industry leader who spent over 60 years devoted to horticulture and field work. Fred, who was not from a tree fruit growing family, grew up in Tennessee. His family moved to the Pacific Northwest when he was 12 years old.
Fred first developed his interest in horticulture during high school when he worked for a local orchardist. He later attended Wenatchee Valley College where he further educated his passion for the industry. Fred worked as a fieldman for Blue Star Growers in Cashmere for more than 30 years and was a significant force in commercializing the Cameo apple. Fred also worked for Dole Fruit Co. in Wenatchee and later Stemilt Growers.
During his last 10 years before retirement, he worked as a senior horticulturist for Van Well Nursery in East Wenatchee. Fred served on many boards of industry organizations including Tree Top, the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission and as board president of the Washington State Horticultural Association. He was an excellent fieldman with a lively attitude and love of the fruit industry.
About this scholarship
Fred was married to Carol Valentine. They had three daughters, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The scholarship in his name was created by the North Central Washington Fieldman’s Association to assist students in attending Wenatchee Valley College and prepare them for a career in the tree fruit industry.
