Alec Derrey
1987-2019
Alec Derrey is remembered for his huge heart, quick smile, sharp wit and remarkable ability to fix almost anything. Raised in a tree fruit industry family, Alec found joy and purpose working with his hands. He was a gifted mechanic who was happiest in the shop with his dad and brother, spinning wrenches, solving problems and bringing machinery back to life.
A graduate of Zillah High School and WYO Tech in Sacramento, Alec earned a degree in Diesel Mechanics and built a life around skill, hard work and creativity. He loved cars, especially his 1963 Nova, and brought an artistic eye to everything he did, from photography and music to the way he approached his craft.
Those who knew Alec remember his humor, honesty, mischievous streak and deep compassion for others. He was selfless with his time and talents, always willing to help family and friends.
The Alec Derrey Memorial Scholarship was created by Alec’s family to honor his legacy by supporting students from tree fruit industry families who share his drive, hands-on ability and interest in skilled trades. Through this scholarship, Alec’s memory continues to encourage students pursuing vocational and technical training, especially those who hope to use their skills in service to agriculture, their families and their communities.
