Who Won the Rears Sprayer? And more from the annual meetingJennifer Witherbee
It was an exciting year for WAEF to again gather with industry friends at the Washington State Tree Fruit Association (WSTFA) Annual Meeting this year held in Yakima this week.
WAEF activities included an alumni breakfast, Rears sprayer raffle drawing, silent & live auctions, and Washington apples license plate promotion.
And the winner was… Kayla Johnson is this year’s grand prize winner of the Rears sprayer raffle! Kayla works at CMI Orchards. Her husband, Colton, is a former WAEF scholarship recipient. The winning ticket was drawn by Mike Rear. We owe tremendous gratitude to the Rear family and Rears Manufacturing for their generous raffle donation now in the 27th year.
Tuesday morning WAEF alumni participating in the annual meeting gathered at 7am to network and catch up with industry friends. 24 WAEF alumni were part of this year’s event representing several industry firms and WAEF supporters.
Tuesday evening’s Industry Awards Banquet included the annual WAEF live and silent auctions. Emcee Sean Gilbert and special WAEF auctioneer Kailan Dunn kept the pace lively and entertaining while raising about $20,000 to support WAEF students.
The last time the WSTFA Annual Meeting was held in person the campaign to secure Washington apples specialty plates launched. Now two years later, we were pushing plate sales on the path to hit 1000 Washington apples license plates on the road by the end of this year. Outside the convention center billboards encouraging purchases were on display. Inside, we had information to assist plate buyers. We were excited to have two proponents that helped secure the legislation stop by the booth Monday, Senator Curtis King and Representative Chris Corry, both of Yakima. License plate information is found here.
