How a New Scholarship Application Becomes a Scholarship Award
Each year, hundreds of students learn about Washington Apple Education Foundation scholarships from their schools, parents, or community members. While each of the 160+ scholarship funds offered through WAEF have unique criteria, one common theme is the requirement for students to have been raised in communities and families with ties to the tree fruit industry.
The first step is for students to check if they qualify by answering a few pre-qualification questions in the online application system. If eligible, they begin the full application process, providing details about their parents’ employment, academic performance, work experience, leadership roles, and extracurricular activities. Applicants also submit three short-answer responses, a one-page essay, a letter of recommendation from a teacher, employer, or mentor, and their academic transcripts. Annually the short answer prompts and the essay question are revised by the scholarship committee. This helps keeps the process refreshed and relevant for reviewers and applicants.
Once submitted, applications are reviewed for completeness. Because we receive far more applications than available scholarships, we require that all materials be turned in by the hard deadline of March 1st; applications with items missing at 11:59pm are disqualified. Qualified applications are then matched to relevant scholarships based on specific eligibility criteria. From there, volunteer review committees—each responsible for a set of scholarships—evaluate applications and select the strongest candidates. This year 45 volunteers are serving on the review committee. Final scholarship decisions are confirmed by the WAEF Board of Directors before recipients are announced.
This year, we’ve introduced Engage2Serve, a new software platform that makes the entire scholarship process electronic. Eliminating the need for paper copies and streamlining application tracking is providing visibility to students prior to submitting and creating efficiencies for both staff and volunteers. The scholarship process is rigorous, without a doubt. Each year we strive to improve and ensure the opportunities created by WAEF donors and supporters are impacting a maximum number of worthy recipients.
Thank you WAEF donors and volunteers!
Watch for award announcements in mid-May!
