Chelan 8th Grade Speller will represent NCW at the Scripps National Spelling Bee

For the 8th year, the Washington Apple Education Foundation sponsored the North Central Washington Regional Spelling Bee.  The winner of the regional spelling bee represents our region this spring in Washington D.C. for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Chelan Middle School 8th grade student Olivia Strandberg earned this year's champion title. This was the fourth year for Olivia Strandberg to represent her school as a finalist in the Regional Spelling Bee.

29 students from grades 4th - 8th competed in the regional spelling bee representing schools in Okanogan, Grant, Chelan and Douglas counties. Each of the participants earned their place in the regional spelling bee by scoring as one of the top two spellers in their local, school spelling bee.

Students spelled an impressive list of words following strict rules established by Scrips National Spelling Bee. Students may ask for country of origin, a definition, the word used in a sentence and for the word to be repeated. During this time the audience and all other spellers remain very silent.

The format of the regional bee is a traditional "spelldown" with each student receiving one word per round. At the end of each round, those who spelled their words correctly continued onto the next round.

The winning word was "lahar" spelled correctly by Olivia Strandberg in the ninth round to capture this year's title and win a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the Washington D.C. area in May. Lahar is a noun defined by Merriam-Webster's dictionary as a moving fluid mass composed of volcanic debris and water.

Sarai Roldan Pina, a 7th grade student from Clovis Point Intermediate School, earned second place and Manson Middle School 7th grade student Carter Lyman earned third place.

Thank you to our officials! Officials for this year's Spelling Bee were Bruce Grim as the pronouncer, Chris Willett as the head judge, Geraldine Warner as the record's judge, Dany Cavadini as stage manager and Missy Raymond as round's judge. The five officials ensured a smooth running spelling bee and the opportunity for each student to do their best.
