Darrin Belton is one of the newest members of the WAEF board of directors though his knowledge of WAEF dates back to the early days of the foundation.
Darrin was elected to serve a three-year term with the foundation in February. He is an apple and cherry grower in the Zillah area and a 30-year employee of Wilbur Ellis Company. He began with the company soon after graduating from Washington State University with a horticulture degree. At Wilbur Ellis, he has held several roles including crop consultant, area manager and now Northwest Sales Manager.
Darrin's initial interaction with WAEF came about as the foundation was initially organizing in the mid-1990s. Darrin was an Ag Forestry classmate of the foundation's first full-time executive director, Sherrye Wyatt. One of the early projects WAEF was involved in was titled F.A.R.M. for Kids, an award program for FFA students that encouraged their introduction of agriculture to younger students. Darrin and a fellow classmate developed the recognition program as their class project and worked with WAEF with early funding.
As a board member of WAEF, Darrin is excited to be part of the soul of the vibrant and prosperous tree fruit industry. He appreciates helping young people that might not otherwise have a chance to attend college. He's also getting a chance to interact with current WAEF students as one of our scholarship recipients, John Haas, is a Wilbur Ellis intern this summer.
Darrin and his wife, Pam, are raising their four children in Darrin's hometown of Zillah. Their oldest begins college this fall at Whitworth University. The Belton family enjoys skiing together in the winter and attending Cougar football games.
When asked for a favorite quote, the first that came to his mind was "The rate of change will never be slower than it is today," fitting for the progressive tree fruit industry.
